Rainbows Children’s Hospice Garden art installation project serves as an innovative garden that uses advanced technology to detect audiences passing by the webcam. The supporting directional sound was also in place to encourage passersby to pause and look at the garden. The webcam then tracked the gender of the passersby, followed by a series of animations that were triggered and projected onto the acrylic screen.
A project collaboration amongst several organizations namely Retail Lab, De Montfort University with the garden design team, Second Nature to produce their first interactive digital installation at the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show 2012, held in London. The project ultimately was awarded Silver Medal under the Fresh category.
Contribution
My contribution to this project was to create the concepts and series of animations for the garden art installation. The details on the artwork pieces were of simple forms and used mainly silhouettes. This is to emphasize the blending of real plants and the digital installation, thus creating a contrast between the two.
Prototype
A set of prototype animations was created to do the initial testing phase. The prototype visual testing of the animation was done on the nursery site. The animations were projected onto the frosted panels against the plants as background. This was to test the clarity and the effect of the animations with the chosen material and plants.
